Marijuana is the most often used illicit drug in our country. But it is losing its illicit status. Twenty-three states have legalized it for medical use, and five states have legalized it for recreational use by those older than 21.

However is it safe, especially for younger users? Some research suggests that it may interfere with the development of the brains of those beginning heavy use before age 16, but other research does not show that it results in abnormalities. A new study is being proposed to clarify its effects on the young by following 10,000 subjects for ten years starting when they are 9 or 10 years old. (Weir, K. Marijuana and the developing brain.
