APA Recommendations for Police Reform

The Monitor on Psychology (2020, 51(7),p. 38) reported on APA’s recommendations for police reform: 1) Promote community policing, 2) Ban chokeholds and strangleholds, 3) Invest in crisis intervention teams, 4) Increase the number of mental health professionals in law enforcement agencies, 5) Involve psychologists in multidisciplinary teams to implement police reforms, 6) Encourage partnerships between mental health organizations and local law enforcement, 7) Discourage police management policies and practices that can trigger implicit and explicit biases, 8) Strengthen data collection, 9) Bolster research.
